The LA Lakers displayed the other night exactly what they have to do to win a championship this season.
If the LA Lakers are to not just return to the NBA playoffs but also to win then they’re going to have to do it on the backs of players like Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum and with Kobe Bryant finishing the game in the final minutes like he did the other night in Milwaukee.
Kobe Bryant is still the best finisher in basketball and quite possibly still the best player in all of the NBA but at 31 years of age I don’t know if he has what it takes to carry a team on his shoulders for an entire season anymore. And as a Laker fan you don’t want him to not when you have the likes of Andrew Bynum, Ron Artest, Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol to shoulder the scoring burden.
There is no doubt that the LA Lakers are the best team in the Western Conference of the NBA but will Laker fans have to remember is that Lakers are necessarily playing against the Western division they’re playing against the Boston Celtics and home-court advantage in the NBA finals and that’s why I think you need a fresh Kobe at the end of the game.
Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher are both playing more minutes this season than they did last season and coach Phil Jackson said that one of his biggest goals this season was to reduce their playing time.
The LA Lakers are playing very well right now. The only thing that has me a bit concerned is the lack of desire on the behalf of Andrew Bynum to play hard defense and rebound when he’s not an integral part of the offense. Andrew Bynum needs to realize that his role on this team is to play defense and rebound if this team is to be truly great.
